Better. Together.
Why Am I Running for State Senator?
Dear Neighbors,
These last few years have been challenging – for all of us. A dangerous pandemic, an uncertain economy, and deeply divisive politics have dominated headlines, disrupted our lives, and sown distrust.
But in conversations with my neighbors, even through these challenging times, I’ve become even more convinced that we are surrounded by kind, talented, innovative, and generous people. And I have great faith that when good people work together, there’s nothing we can’t achieve for the betterment of our community. As a person with nearly 20 years of experience in state government and as local school board member, I have the knowledge and experience to collaboratively find solutions to many issues facing our community – whether moving legislation through the process, diving deep within the bureaucracy of state government, or partnering with neighbors to find the right approach.
I am running for State Senator to be a bridge builder and to deliver, real tangible results on the cost of living crisis, educational achievement, affordable and accessible health care, environmental stewardship, and government effectiveness. In these turbulent times, we need someone who can hit the ground running to make Minnesota better for decades to come.
As our State Senator, I will:
Fight to ensure neighbors and families can afford their lives –Big corporations and billionaires have concentrated immense wealth and power, while working people have seen their wages remain flat, costs rise, and economic insecurity increase. As our State Senator, I’ll work to ensure that all those who work hard are treated fairly, earn a living wage, and have the security they need to care for their families. And I will take every step to lower costs for families by standing up to billionaires to unrig the economy.
Build a “Better Offer” – Together. – In this time of chaos and cruelty on the national level, it is not enough to resist the rise in authoritarianism, we must also offer an alternative – a better offer. In the coming months, I will ask your ideas and we will build a “Better Offer” together. Throughout the summer and fall, we will share our vision with our neighbors.
Fight every day to improve the material conditions of your life. I believe that being a State Senator is a sacred trust. I will work every day to ensure that you are being treated fairly under the law – and when we can improve the outcomes for our neighbors and communities, I will work collaboratively to build solutions that meet our highest aspirations.
Listen First – We can only meet our potential if we are listening to each other. There is so much noise in politics right now and too many politicians think that is an invitation to just yell louder. Whole parts of our community believe that they are not being seen or listened to. Condescension in our politics is driving us apart from one other. I will listen to the problems impacting your life so we can build a politics we are proud of – and improve our communities along the way.
I’ll work hard, listen to all of our neighbors, and fight for your priorities at the State Capitol. I’ll always have an open door, and bring an open mind to every challenge and conversation. Because when we take the time to listen to each other, and learn from each other, we can build an even better Minnesota – for all of us. We are Better Together.
I can’t wait to work with you to move our state forward.
All my best,
Paul Cumings
